Australian Journalist Hit by Rubber Bullet During LA Protests
Violent protests have rocked Los Angeles following President Trump’s controversial immigration crackdown. Amid the chaos, Australian journalist Lauren Tomasi of Nine News was struck by a rubber bullet while reporting live from downtown.
On June 8, what began as peaceful demonstrations turned violent as crowds grew and clashes with police intensified. Tomasi was reporting near the Metropolitan Detention Centre when the LAPD began firing rubber bullets. A bystander shouted, “You just f**king shot the reporter,” as footage showed an officer appearing to aim at her. Tomasi stayed calm and confirmed she was okay.
Nine News later stated both Tomasi and her cameraman were safe, stressing the dangers journalists face while covering unrest. The incident drew strong international reaction. Australian senator Sarah Hanson-Young demanded answers, saying, “Stop shooting at our journalists.”
The LAPD declared an “unlawful assembly,” warning media and the public to stay away. President Trump called for National Guard deployment, while local leaders, including Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom, opposed the move.
Bass urged residents to avoid violence, saying, “Don’t give the administration what it wants.” As tensions continue, the risks faced by journalists on the frontlines highlight the critical need to protect press freedom.
