Pope Leo Responds to Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ Invitation

President Donald Trump recently announced the creation of a proposed “Board of Peace,” describing it as a new diplomatic initiative aimed at addressing global conflicts and promoting stability in regions facing unrest, including Gaza. He presented the idea as an alternative to existing international mechanisms and invited several nations to become permanent members. In a move that drew particular attention, Trump also invited Pope Leo, hoping to include moral and spiritual leadership in the effort. The proposal quickly sparked mixed reactions worldwide. Membership required a $1 billion contribution, raising concerns among many governments.

Several countries — including Germany, Canada, France, Italy, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine — declined the invitation, suggesting hesitation over the board’s structure, financial demands, or political implications. At the same time, other nations expressed willingness to participate. Israel, Argentina, Russia, Hungary, and Saudi Arabia agreed to join, giving the initiative an initial base of support.

The divided response highlighted broader geopolitical differences and varying views on diplomatic frameworks outside established institutions. When the plan was first introduced, Trump’s invitation to Pope Leo attracted global attention. As leader of the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope’s involvement could have added significant moral influence. Initially, the Vatican said the proposal was under careful consideration.

In the months that followed, however, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Leo declined the invitation. According to officials, his decision reflected concerns about the structure and approach of the initiative. Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s chief diplomat, explained that the Pope believes global conflicts should be addressed through established multilateral institutions such as the United Nations, emphasizing cooperation rather than initiatives led by a single nation.
