Young couple show how they’ve saved over $27K by living “frugally” in houseboat each year

They’ve gained so much value from living this way.

In a world that’s dominated by rising housing costs and bustling city life, Sarah Spiro and Brandon Jones made an unconventional decision.

It changed their lives forever.
At the ages of 27 and 40 respectively, the couple embarked on a unique journey, leaving behind their separate two-bedroom properties.

So, where’d they go?

They settled into a cozy houseboat.
In April 2021, Sarah and Brandon found themselves trading traditional housing for a more adventurous and affordable alternative.

With an initial investment of $45,000, the couple purchased their dream houseboat.

However, it was not until two months later, after investing an additional $23,000 into renovations, that they could finally call it home.

Sarah described the decision as a “no-brainer”.
The cost of living on their houseboat amounted to only $2,500 per year. That’s what they were paying every month for their apartments.

By embracing the houseboat lifestyle, they significantly reduced their housing expenses, allowing them to allocate their resources to other aspects of their lives.

Like, Fontana Lake, North Carolina. Sarah and Brandon carefully selected Fontana Lake as the location for their aquatic abode.

The couple is captivated by the serene ambiance and tranquility that the lake offers.

It’s the complete opposite of living amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

Every day and night brought them a sense of peace and harmony that had eluded them in their previous urban dwellings.

Sarah, in a video tour, toured online viewers into their remarkable houseboat.

The entire dock is 500 square feet.
The living space inside the boat measures 225 square feet.

The main living area serves as a multifunctional space, serving as a living room, office, and kitchen combined.

Although the couple spends approximately 90% of their time outdoors on the docks, they take pride in their compact and cozy living space.

Utilizing solar power as their primary source of energy, Sarah and Brandon have embraced an off-the-grid lifestyle.

Their power needs are minimal.
Their refrigerator has the ability to run on both solar power and propane. However, the couple opted for propane to conserve wattage, allowing them to power other appliances on board.

Their self-sufficiency aligns with their desire for a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle on the water.

They’ve lived 2 blissful years on the water.
Nomadic spirits that they are, however, Sarah and Brandon have embarked on a new venture.

They are currently renovating a larger houseboat and plan to rent out their current home to holidaymakers.

This decision provides an opportunity for others to experience the joy and tranquility of living on a houseboat.

It’s a win-win for everyone.
Sarah and Brandon sure found a piece of paradise on Fontana Lake after leaving behind the stresses of traditional housing for a more affordable and serene lifestyle.

Their decision to live in the houseboat not only reduced their living expenses but also allowed them to reconnect with nature and prioritize a simpler way of life.

Through their virtual tour and future plans, they will surely be able to inspire others to consider alternative living arrangements that promote sustainability, tranquility, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
