Adam Lambert’s Unforgettable Rendition of “Believe” Brings Cher to Tears

Adam Lambert, an American Idol alum and current Queen frontman, performed Cher’s iconic 1998 hit “Believe” at the 41st Annual Kennedy Center Honors in 2019, leaving the legendary pop diva in tears. The annual awards ceremony that took place on December 26, 2018, was broadcast from the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, D.C. USA. The ceremony honours individuals for their lifetime artistic achievement. Adam Lambert was performing at the ceremony in tribute to Cher, who was one of the honourees.

Lambert’s version of “Believe” was heartfelt and ballad-like, a stark contrast to the upbeat and electric original. The camera panned to a visibly moved Cher wiping away tears as Lambert sang. Three weeks later, Cher was still moved by the performance, writing on Twitter that it was “BEYOND COMPREHENSION.”

Cher wasn’t the only performer to be surprised at the Kennedy Center Honors. Rock legend Cyndi Lauper, who had previously told Cher that she was out of town, surprised her with a performance of “If I Could Turn Back Time.” Lauper and Lambert closed the show with a duet of “I Got You Babe.”

In a recent interview with Attitude magazine, Lambert reflected on his iconic performance of “Believe.” Lambert said he was incredibly nervous before the performance, and his heart was in his throat. However, he also said it was an honour to perform a song by one of the most iconic singers of all time. Lambert was a fan of Cher’s music when he graduated high school, and the singer’s 1998 album, “Believe,” was one of his favourites.

Lambert’s performance at the Kennedy Center Honors isn’t the first time he has wowed audiences with a tribute to a music legend. Back in 2016, Lambert’ incredible vocals were paying tribute to George Michael on a TV show named “Greatest Hits”. He put in another wonderful performance, this time of the 1987 hit, “Faith.” Fans are very impressed with both performances, leading to Lambert being called one of the best vocalists of his generation.

The Kennedy Center Honors is one of the greatest honours an American performer can receive. The awards ceremony, which has been held for 44 years, honours individuals for their lifetime artistic achievement. Other honourees at the 2018 ceremony included country star Reba McEntire, jazz composer Wayne Shorter, Philip Glass, and Lin-Manuel Miranda and the team from Hamilton.
