\nIn 2015, the Associated Press was blasted for referring to Amal\u2013who at the time was representing Egyptian-Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy\u2013as an \u201cactor\u2019s wife.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Tweet read, \u201cAmal Clooney, actor\u2019s wife, representing Al-Jazeera journalist accused in Egypt of ties to extremists.\u201d<\/p>\n
People fired back at AP, driving the news outlet to revise the Tweet to, \u201cHuman rights lawyer Amal Clooney criticizes prison terms handed down to three Al-Jazeera English journalists.\u201d
\nResponding on BBC through Entertainment Tonight, Amal tactfully said, \u201cThere\u2019s not much I can do to control it except keep going. When people criticize journalism that focuses on the wrong issues, that\u2019s heartening and that shows that people expect more from their press.\u201d<\/p>\n
In March 2022, Amal was recognized by Time in a cover feature titled Women of the Year, 12 Leaders Working Toward a More Equal World. The story was written by one of her clients, Maria Ressa, a Filipino-American journalist and Nobel Peace laureate. In the article, Amal Clooney Won\u2019t Back Down, Amal says about her increased celebrity and criticism:<\/p>\n
\u201cIn terms of an increased public profile, I think all I can do is try to turn the spotlight to what is important. That can benefit some clients.
