My babysitter canceled last minute, so I brought my four-year-old son, Micah, with me to work. It was Halloween, and he was thrilled to wear his little firefighter costume\u2014red helmet, coat, and all. At some point, between refilling coffee and taking orders, I glanced over and\u2014he was gone.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7808-240x300.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-17417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7808-240x300.webp 240w, https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7808.webp 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><br \/>\nIt was Halloween and the diner where I\u2019ve been working for some time now was expected to be full that evening. However, my babysitter quit in the last minute and I was forced to bring my four-year-old son, Micah, to work. He wasn\u2019t in the bathroom, so I went into the kitchen to see if he had wondered there. And yes, there he was, speaking to a firefighter.<br \/>\nThe man in the uniform seemed to be interested in my son\u2019s words. He was listening to him very carefully, and at one moment, he started crying.<\/p>\n<p>Unaware of what was going on, I approached closer.<\/p>\n<p>I realized Micah was sharing his dad\u2019s story with the broad-shouldered man.<\/p>\n<p>My husband was also a firefighter who had lost his life in a fire the year prior. Wiping his tears, he crouched down to Micah\u2019s level and asked him, \u201cWho was your daddy, buddy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Micah revealed his dad\u2019s name, the firefighter started crying even harder and embraced him in a hug. \u201cYour dad was my friend. He truly was a hero,\u201d the firefighter said.<\/p>\n<p>It turned out the firefighter and my husband attended training together and then ended up working at the same fire station.<\/p>\n<p>He reached to his pocket and took out a small, silver badge, worn, but still shining. \u201cThis belonged to your dad,\u201d he said as he handed it to Micah. \u201cHe once gave it to me for good luck, but now I want you to have it.\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7811-300x200.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-17420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7811-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7811-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7811-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7811.webp 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\nMicha was too young to understand what the firefighter was trying to tell him, but at that moment, I realized that the grief over my husband\u2019s passing didn\u2019t only belong to us. It was shared.<\/p>\n<p>I knew some of my husband\u2019s colleagues, and now I was glad to meet this gentle man, whose name was Tyler.<\/p>\n<p>That night taught me that love doesn\u2019t fade with loss but continues to live on through the memories, the unexpected bonds, and even silver badges passed down.<\/p>\n<p>My husband was gone, but Micah and I weren\u2019t alone.
