Credit: Pola Damonte via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The shocking moment was captured on video which has been shared widely on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Tourists watched the scene unfold during a visit to the 82-foot ancient pyramid in Yucat\u00e1n, per Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>Footage shows the man sprinting up the steep steps of the sacred structure as onlookers gathered at the bottom, booing and heckling him.<\/p>\n<p>Some people in the crowd shouted at the man, calling him an \u201cidiot\u201d and \u201cstupid\u201d, while one woman can be heard yelling: \u201cYou are not allowed to go up the temple!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A security guard is seen scaling the pyramid in an attempt to stop the man, while others try to intercept him at the top.<\/p>\n<p>Two guards can be seen running around the summit of the pyramid as the tourist disappears from view, reportedly trying to hide inside a chamber.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Mexico?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Mexico<\/a>\ud83c\uddf2\ud83c\uddfd: A German tourist ignored the rules and climbed Kukulcan pyramid in Chichen Itza, sparking outraged by the rest of the visitors. He\u2019s clearly in good physical condition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As the 38-year-old German tourist was escorted out by members of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the Mexican National Guard, tensions exploded.<\/p>\n<p>A mob of tourists surrounded the man, some physically attacking him while others shouted that he should be \u201csacrificed\u201d \u2014 a chilling reference to the ritual human sacrifices once performed by ancient Mayans atop the pyramid.<\/p>\n<p>Guards tried to de-escalate the situation as the crowd continued heckling him during his removal. Credit: \u00a9 Marco Bottigelli \/ Getty<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time a tourist has caused chaos at the historic site.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, a Polish tourist who defied the same ban was met with instant vigilante justice when a bare-chested man in shorts and sandals struck him over the head with a large wooden stick as he descended the steps.<\/p>\n<p>The Polish man, said to have been fined after spending about 12 hours in custody, was stunned by the blow and shielded his head with his hands. He later told authorities he had climbed the pyramid to take photos for social media.<\/p>\n<p>The Temple of Kukulcan \u2014 formally known to archaeologists as Chich\u00e9n Itz\u00e1 Structure 5B18 \u2014 features four staircases with approximately 91 steps each and dominates the center of the ancient Mayan city.<\/p>\n<p>Despite repeated warnings and signs, some tourists continue to risk fines, arrest, and public humiliation for the sake of a photo \u2014 but judging by the crowd\u2019s reaction this time, locals are no longer waiting for authorities to respond.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A tourist was met with a wave of angry locals after he decided to climb the world wonder Chichen Itza in Mexico.
