Mildred stormed out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel like a queen in crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just saw myself n*k*d in the mirror,\u201d she declared, clutching her robe like it might shield her from emotional damage. \u201cAnd I look like hell. Bob, give me a nice compliment to lift my spirits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bob, parked in his usual chair with a crossword and exactly zero intention of getting up, barely looked up.
\n\u201cYour eyesight is perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a pause. The kind of pause that happens before either a slap or a sigh.<\/p>\n

Mildred squinted at him. \u201cWas that sarcasm?\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned a page. \u201cWasn\u2019t trying to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

She huffed. \u201cI carried your children. I ironed your socks. I made you soup when you were sick. And this is the thanks I get?\u201d<\/p>\n

Bob looked up. \u201cYou used canned soup, Mildred.\u201d

\n\u201cAnd I appreciated it,\u201d he replied. \u201cJust like I appreciate that after 42 years, you still think I\u2019m brave enough to lie.\u201d<\/p>\n

She gave him a look sharp enough to butter toast. \u201cSo, no compliment?\u201d<\/p>\n

Bob smiled slyly. \u201cOf course there is.\u201d<\/p>\n
