Son number two, a lawyer, arrived next. \u201cYou and Mom look great, Dad,\u201d he said. \u201cI just flew in from Los Angeles between depositions and didn\u2019t have time to shop for a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s okay,\u201d the father reassured him. \u201cWe\u2019re just glad you made it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The daughter, a marketing executive, arrived last. \u201cHello and Happy Anniversary! I\u2019m sorry, but my boss is sending me out of town, and I\u2019ve been busy packing, so I didn\u2019t have time to get you anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
After dessert, the father spoke up, \u201cThere\u2019s something your mother and I have wanted to tell you for a long time. You see, we were very poor. Despite this, we managed to send each of you to college. Throughout the years, we knew we loved each other deeply, but we never found the time to actually get married.\u201d<\/p>\n
