A sailor brought his boat up to a restaurant dock one sunny afternoon, tied it off and started walking toward the entrance.<\/p>\n
He had been on the water all morning and was starving.<\/p>\n
Before he could get far, the dock hand stepped in front of him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry, sir, but I can\u2019t let you dine here today.<\/p>\n
This establishment has a necktie policy, and you are not wearing one.\u201d<\/p>\n
The sailor looked down at his shorts, deck shoes and faded shirt.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course I don\u2019t have a tie on,\u201d replied the sailor, \u201cI\u2019m on a boat!\u201d<\/p>\n
The dock hand shrugged.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, go down below and put one on,\u201d said the dock hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t HAVE one!\u201d shouted the sailor.<\/p>\n
The dock hand sighed. He didn\u2019t really want to lose a paying customer, especially one who looked hungry enough to eat the menu.<\/p>\n
So he thought for a moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, why don\u2019t you just find something that approximates a tie<\/p>\n
That should be OK.\u201d<\/p>\n
The sailor disappeared below deck.<\/p>\n
Several minutes passed.<\/p>\n
Then ten.<\/p>\n
The dock hand began wondering whether the man had sailed away.<\/p>\n
Finally, the sailor climbed back onto the dock wearing a pair of jumper cables loosely around his neck.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is all I could find to put around my neck,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The dock hand stared at him.<\/p>\n
He looked at the jumper cables.<\/p>\n
Then at the restaurant.<\/p>\n
Then back at the sailor.<\/p>\n
