Every night before bed, a man had exactly the same routine.<\/p>\n
He brushed his teeth, checked that the doors were locked, poured himself a shot of whiskey and drank it before going to sleep.<\/p>\n
He had been doing this for years.<\/p>\n
His wife had tried everything to make him quit.<\/p>\n
She had given him lectures.<\/p>\n
She had hidden the bottle.<\/p>\n
She had even replaced his favorite whiskey glass with one that said, \u201cThink About Your Liver.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nothing worked.<\/p>\n
Finally, she decided that instead of arguing, she would use science.<\/p>\n
One evening, she placed two shot glasses on the kitchen table.<\/p>\n
She filled one with water and the other with whiskey.<\/p>\n
Then she brought over her husband\u2019s bait box and called him into the room.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want you to see this.\u201d<\/p>\n
The husband sighed and sat down, already suspicious.<\/p>\n
His wife took a live worm and dropped it into the glass of water.<\/p>\n
The worm happily wriggled around.<\/p>\n
\u201cSee?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Then she took another worm and dropped it into the whiskey.<\/p>\n
Within moments, the worm stopped moving.<\/p>\n
His wife crossed her arms triumphantly.<\/p>\n
Surely this demonstration was impossible to misunderstand.<\/p>\n
She looked at her husband and asked,<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat do you have to say about this experiment?\u201d<\/p>\n
The man studied both glasses carefully.<\/p>\n
He looked at the dead worm.<\/p>\n
Then at the whiskey.<\/p>\n
Finally, his face brightened as though he had just learned some excellent news.<\/p>\n
