Sadly, addiction isn\u2019t uncommon in the world of the rich and famous.<\/p>\n

Bradley Cooper is just one of many who are \u201clucky\u201d to be alive after battling years of addiction.<\/p>\n

During a new episode of Running Wild With Bear Grylls: The Challenge, the Oscar-nominated actor opened up about his challenges with overcoming his dependency to alcohol and drugs.<\/p>\n

He explained that prior to The Hangover, he had already been \u201cin the game for 10 years just bangin\u2019 around.\u201d So he was fortunate, \u201cI didn\u2019t get lost in fame.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, that didn\u2019t stop him from having \u201csome wild years\u201d prior to reaching celebrity status.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn terms of alcohol and drugs, yeah. But that had nothing to do with fame, though,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I was lucky, y\u2019know? I got sober at 29 years old. And I\u2019ve been sober for 19 years.\u201d

The Maestro star previously discussed hitting \u201crock bottom\u201d on the Smartless podcast, hosted by Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes.<\/p>\n

In 2004, Arnett stopped by Cooper\u2019s place and noticed he still hadn\u2019t let the dogs out to go to the bathroom.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was the first time I ever realized I had a problem with drugs and alcohol,\u201d Cooper said. \u201cIt was Will saying that to me, I\u2019ll never forget it\u2026 It changed my entire life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cooper recalled having \u201czero self esteem\u201d and being \u201cso lost,\u201d especially after he \u201cgot fired-slash-quit Alias.\u201d

Despite the struggles, Cooper said his former life as an addict helped him play Jackson Maine in 2018\u2019s A Star is Born.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt made it easier to really enter in there,\u201d Cooper said. \u201cAnd thank goodness I was at a place in my life where I was at ease with all that. So I could really let myself go.\u201d<\/p>\n
