{"id":3381,"date":"2024-01-08T15:10:02","date_gmt":"2024-01-08T15:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/?p=3381"},"modified":"2024-01-08T15:10:02","modified_gmt":"2024-01-08T15:10:02","slug":"mother-attacks-animal-lovers-says-the-term-fur-babies-is-an-insult-to-moms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/?p=3381","title":{"rendered":"Mother attacks animal lovers, says the term fur babies is \u201can insult to moms\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A population of animal lovers are offended by a mother of three children who says that calling pets fur babies is \u201can insult to moms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Used as a term of endearment by pet parents who consider their four-legged children as part of their brood, \u201cfur babies,\u201d according to the Cambridge Dictionary, is \u201ca pet, especially one that someone treats with a lot of love and kindness as if it were a baby.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Overlooking that \u201cfur babies\u201d is part of the English language, the woman, who admits that she might sound like a \u201cself-righteous parent,\u201d provoked a flood of comments from the online community with her pontifical shaming of pet parents.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a growing divide of people who consider their pets as babies and those who see their four-legged friends as only animals. According to Forbes, 85 per cent of dog owners and 76 per cent of cat owners consider their pets to be a member of the family. And, in 2022, Americans spent $136.8 billion on their pets, up from $123.6 billion in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Another survey of 2,000 cat and dog owners reports that 81 per cent say they treat their pets the same way they treat people and 71 per cent regularly put their pets needs ahead of their own.<\/p>\n<p>The study, on behalf of Chewy, shows that 47 per cent call their pets \u201cbaby,\u201d and one in three people refer to themselves as their fur baby\u2019s \u201cmom or dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Broadbent says \u201cthat is an insult to moms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the summer of 2022, Broadbent, writing for an online publication, shared a story urging pet owners to stop calling their pets \u201cfur babies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mother of three, says she has two dogs and three kids and concludes that \u201ckids and dogs are not the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026But never did we call those beloved canines \u201cfurkids\u201d or \u201cfurbabies\u201d. Because the last I checked, dogs ain\u2019t people.\u201d She continues, \u201cYour puppy is not your child, so stop saying that he is. I have three children now, and I know this for certain\u2013kids and dogs are not the same.\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_6859-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_6859-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_6859.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has too much time on her hands\u2026I\u2019m pretty sure everyone is well aware of the differences. I have 2 children and I love my fur baby,\u201d writes one, while a second adds, \u201cshe is absolutely right, they are not the same, which is why dogs are furbabies, children are skinpuppies and kids are baby goats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A third shares, \u201cDogs who we love are like babies with fur they are the most loyal of all beings if treated with love\u2026this lady knows nothing to make this sad request to others \u2026it\u2019s a free world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Broadbent goes on to explain how she babyproofed her home, that included removing \u201cstrangulation hazards,\u201d hiding \u201ccleaning fluids\u201d and placing \u201csafety locks on all the cabinets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For puppy-proofing, she said \u201cyou removed all things chewable, took up poisonous plants, and provided appropriate chew toys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to The American Kennel Club, she missed a few crucial pet-proofing points, like:<\/p>\n<p>Broadbent does however agree that \u201cpet ownership is a serious commitment that should only be taken up by those who really mean to care for an animal for the rest of its natural life.\u201d Suggesting that \u201cyou can most ignore your dog,\u201d she continues, \u201cYou\u2019re stuck with your dog\u2026except you\u2019re not because you can leave. Before my husband and I had kids, we traveled all the time\u2013dropped the pups by the doggie spa, paid extra for playground time, and hopped the plane guilt-free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Broadbent falls into the 60 per cent of people who don\u2019t consider their pets when vacationing.<\/p>\n<p>And while only 40 per cent reported their pets influence the trips they take, \u201cmore than half (62%) said they wish they could bring their pets with them when they leave either \u2018all of the time\u2019 or \u2018most of the time.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPets have become our whole world, so it\u2019s no surprise to see them claim their rightful place of prominence in the household,\u201d says Dr. Katy Nelson, senior veterinarian at Chewy. \u201cThis reflects the larger trend of \u2018pet prioritization,\u2019 or placing our pets\u2019 needs above our own when considering major life decisions or planning our social calendars and daily behaviors.\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_6860-193x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_6860-193x300.png 193w, https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_6860.png 506w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Online users in the \u201cfur baby\u201d camp are not pleased with Broadbent\u2019s opinions.<br \/>\nOne user writes, \u201cSo, I have two daughters and a fur baby. My daughters call the fur baby their little brother. My husband and I call him our son. He knows each of us by name. If my husband tells him to go to Mommy, he\u2019s immediately at my feet. Some people cannot accept that these \u2018fur babies\u2019 are a part of our family.\u201d The post continues, \u201cThey are loved, and they love us back fiercely and unconditionally. I personally feel sorry for people who never experienced the unconditional love of a dog. Maybe then, they would understand \u2018fur babies.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another says, \u201cShe\u2019s absolutely right, they are not the same. Animals are generally more polite and nicer to be around than some kids these days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of the almost 16,000 comments, only a handful agree with Broadbent\u2019s sentiments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI agree with her\u2026 they are pets\u2026animals\u2026not darling children,\u201d says one in a comment that triggered hundreds of replies.<\/p>\n<p>One fires back, \u201cWhy can\u2019t they all be darling? I treat my fur baby as I would want to be treated. I show my son that same love and respect. I have enough love to go around!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And another says, \u201cTotally agree with you! My fur babies are more behaved than some \u201cdarling\u201d children as well!!\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_6861-234x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_6861-234x300.png 234w, https:\/\/ourtimenew.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IMG_6861.png 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A fur baby lover writes, \u201cMy dogs, cats and whatever else I have as a family can be my \u201cbabies\u201d whether they have fur, feathers, skin or scales. Each of them have a special place in my heart and life that gives them a loving title of my choosing. So don\u2019t offend me with your tiny little closed mind, and crawl back under your rock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We love animals and think it\u2019s awesome that people treat their fur babies so well! Animals are such sweet and innocent little creatures who are deserving of unconditional love, with all the toppings, that their human parents can afford.<\/p>\n<p>Call your furry kid anything you want!
