The film\u2019s themes, which heavily criticize the \u201cChristian nationalism\u201d that Reiner purports go against the teachings of Jesus Christ, were embraced by liberal movie critics who gave the film a 91% favorable rating on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not surprising that Dan Partland\u2019s documentary about the increasing influence of Christian Nationalism begins and ends with footage from Jan. 6., 2021. Christian Nationalists were among the principal organizers of the insurrection that occurred that day, which featured a trespasser carrying a Christian flag onto the Senate floor. In the years since, his films have vacillated between inspirational tales and political messages, failing to recapture the success of earlier hits like 1995\u2019s \u201cThe American President.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leaning into politics during an election year has been a winning strategy for other films without the heavy-handed proselytizing. \u201cThe Ides of March\u201d (2011) and \u201cKilling Them Softly (2012) performed respectably while running on themes of deep cynicism about American politics and withheld judgment of one political party over another. Reiner\u2019s approach, however, is guaranteed to alienate half of a nation that elected President Trump and large swaths of Christians who make up 63% of Americans, critiquing both as lost sheep conflicted by their religious and political beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the film, Reiner interviews both MAGA voters and supposed subject matter experts who issue sharply divergent takes on President Trump\u2019s legacy and own moral code. \u201cGod &#038; Country\u201d treads familiar territory to \u201cThe Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism,\u201d a 2019 nonfiction book by author and reporter Kristen Stewart.<\/p>\n<p>Director Dan Partland, who previously oversaw 2012\u2019s film \u201cUnfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump,\u201d previously explained his desire to call out Christians for, in his eyes, being misled by a demogogue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is the intertwining of a Christian identity with a political identity such that it can be hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. The danger to democracy led me to explore this topic, but what I learned in the process is that the threat may be even greater to the Church itself,\u201d Partland told one movie news outlet during a promotional tour for the film.<\/p>\n<p>Reiner\u2019s latest flop may be a nail in the coffin for Hollywood\u2019s continual efforts to politicize religion in its franchises.
