Before coming to Washington in 1977, Rosalynn was seen as unassuming and quiet, but she soon turned into an eloquent speaker, campaigner and activist. She was well-known for her efforts on mental health and caregiving and women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n

Rosalynn got the nickname \u201cthe Steel Magnolia\u201d because of her influence, loyalty, and compassion. It was reported that while serving as a first lady, White House staffers sometimes sought her approval on initiatives before bringing them up to the president.<\/p>\n

Rosalynn and Jimmy were celebrated as the oldest living presidential couple and were married for 77 years. Sadly, Rosalynn passed away on November 19, just two days after entering hospice along with her loving husband.<\/p>\n

The two spent the last days of her life by each other\u2019s side. Jimmy asked his bed to be placed next to hers so that they could talk to one another.<\/p>\n

My father told her he loved her and thanked her for all the wonderful things she had done,\u201d the Carters\u2019 son James E. \u201cChip\u201d Carter III, who was in his parents\u2019 bedroom with other family members said. \u201cThen he asked us to leave so he could be alone with her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure he prayed,\u201d Chip explained.<\/p>\n

Sadly, however, by Sunday morning, Rosalynn had lost the power of speech. Later that day, her long and inspiring life came to an end.<\/p>\n

Just how generous Rosalynn was and how big her heart was speaks one of the decisions she made before her passing. Namely, Rosalynn was insistent that fellow ex-First Lady Melania Trump should attend her funeral, despite the fact that Jimmy didn\u2019t agree with Trump\u2019s administration politics.<\/p>\n

As reported by SheKnows, citing the Washington Post, \u201call former first ladies, including Melania Trump,\u201d having been invited to Rosalynn\u2019s funeral. This was confirmed by Rosalynn\u2019s son who said his mom had been \u201cinvolved in that decision\u201d though she knew that there were \u201cpublic disagreements over many issues\u201d between her husband and Melania\u2019s husband.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother was a gracious person, and she would treat everybody with respect, including a former first lady,\u201d Chip said.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump confirmed that he and Melania would be attending Rosalynn\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n

Rest in peace, Rosalynn.<\/p>\n
