\nCarrie followed in her famous mom\u2019s footsteps as an actress. She had a major role on the TV series Fame, and played Maureen in the first national tour of the musical Rent. She also appeared in many TV shows, including The X-Files, Murder, She Wrote and thirtysomething.<\/p>\n

But things weren\u2019t always easy between the mother and daughter. Carrie struggled with drug addiction as a teenager, causing heartbreak for Burnett.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy daughter Carrie got into drugs. In that situation, don\u2019t be their best friend,\u201d Burnett told AARP in 2020. \u201cWhen we got her into a third rehab, oh, she hated my guts! You have to love them enough to let them hate you.\u201d
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought \u2026 was there something I should have seen, something I should have known, something I would have spotted? You know, what did I miss? Was I not strong enough?\u201d she told ABC News in 2002.<\/p>\n

But Burnett told AARP that her daughter got sober by the time she was 18, and the two became closer than ever and \u201chad a good 20 years\u201d where they were \u201cjoined at the hip.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carrie\u2019s career took off and her relationship with her mom was never better\u2026 until a personal tragedy struck: In 2001, Carrie was diagnosed with lung cancer that later spread to her brain.
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

Carrie\u2019s cancer battle
\nBut just like her mom, Carrie had a strong sense of humor which she used to get through the battle: \u201cCarrie had a spirit about her, all through her treatments,\u201d Burnett told ABC News.<\/p>\n

Burnett was also moved by her daughter\u2019s mantra: \u201cIn the hospital she said, \u2018Every day I wake up and decide, today I\u2019m going to love my life.\u2019 And that was her mantra.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carrie died in 2002, at the age of 38. Burnett was devastated by the untimely death of her beloved daughter, but ultimately found the strength to keep going.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t get over it, but you cope,\u201d she told People in 2018. \u201cWhat else can you do? When Carrie died, I didn\u2019t want to get out of bed for a while, but I had a play to finish that we started that Hal Prince was going to direct. I owed it to Carrie, and I owed it to Hal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Still with me\u2019 21 years later
\nIn a new interview ahead of Burnett\u2019s 90th birthday, she opened up about her daughter\u2019s death over 20 years later, and says she still thinks about Carrie every day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s not a day or almost a moment goes by that she\u2019s not with me,\u201d Burnett told People Magazine this month. \u201cWe worked together, we laughed together, we cried together. She was a force.\u201d<\/p>\n

She says her daughter\u2019s strong spirit during her sickness still serves as an inspiration to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen she got sick, I remember she was in the hospital and I would go to see her every day,\u201d Burnett recalled. \u201cOne day, a nurse at the hospital said, \u2018Carrie cheers us up.\u2019 I asked Carrie why she was always cheerful, and her reply was, \u2018Everyday I wake up and decide.\u2019 That\u2019s the key word, decide.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI say that to myself every morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nBurnett turns 90 on April 26. Despite the heartbreaking loss she faced 21 years ago, she\u2019s still going strong and has a positive attitude.
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

She has recently been the recipient of many lifetime achievement honors, including the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. In 2019, the Golden Globes named their television lifetime achievement award after her, the \u201cCarol Burnett Award,\u201d and she was the first recipient. Last year, she returned to TV in a memorable guest role on Better Call Saul.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t wrap my head around it,\u201d the legendary comedian told People about turning 90. \u201cI still feel like I\u2019m about 11, but I\u2019m amazed. It sure went fast. But I\u2019m glad because I\u2019ve got all my parts \u2014 got my hips, I got my knees and I\u2019ve got my brain, so I\u2019m happy about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s always devastating to lose a child, and it\u2019s clear that Carrie\u2019s death left a lasting impact on Carol Burnett. But we\u2019re glad that the comedy legend is still going strong and wish her a happy upcoming 90th birthday!<\/p>\n
