Ex-NFL Player Devon Wylie Dead At 35

In a somber announcement, the family of former NFL wide receiver Devon Wylie shared the heartbreaking news of his passing at the age of 35. Wylie, known for his stints with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tennessee Titans, left a lasting impact on the world of football and those who knew him. While the cause of his death remains undisclosed, his memory will forever be etched in the hearts of many.

Devon Wylie’s journey through the world of football began as a star at Granite Bay High School in California, where his passion for the game ignited. His talent quickly gained recognition, and he continued to shine as he donned the jersey of Fresno State from 2007 to 2011. In his senior season, he made 56 receptions in 13 games, showcasing his remarkable skills.

Wylie’s excellence extended beyond the collegiate level. He led the Western Athletic Conference with an impressive 15.38 yards per punt return, leaving opponents in awe. Notably, he returned two punts for touchdowns against powerhouse teams like No. 10 Nebraska and No. 5 Boise State, solidifying his status as a rising star.

The young athlete’s prowess was further highlighted during the college football All-Star game, the East-West Shrine Bowl, where he recorded four punt returns for 54 yards. His performance in these high-stakes games caught the eye of NFL scouts.

In 2012, the Kansas City Chiefs drafted Devon Wylie in the fourth round, believing in his potential to make a significant impact in the league. Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel spoke highly of him, praising his quickness, route-running abilities, and potential to make game-changing plays.

Wylie’s NFL journey began with promise, as he caught six passes in six games for Kansas City. However, the unpredictable nature of professional sports led to his release before the start of the 2013 season. Despite this setback, he remained determined to prove himself in the league.

In 2013, Wylie found himself in the Tennessee Titans’ roster, where he played in two games during the season. Over the next three seasons, he faced the challenges of bouncing between practice squads of various NFL teams, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to the game he loved.

While Devon Wylie’s NFL career may have encountered obstacles, his love for football never wavered. He continued to pursue his passion and last played professional football in 2017 when he joined the CFL. Beyond the gridiron, Wylie delved into a music career, showcasing his multifaceted talents to the world.

Upon hearing of his passing, tributes poured in from all corners of the football community. Barstool Fresno State hailed him as one of the best special teams return players to emerge from Fresno State, an accolade that spoke to his remarkable impact on the field. The entire Wylie family and the red wave of fans mourned his loss, emphasizing the void he leaves behind.

Devon Wylie was more than just a football player. He was a beloved brother, a cherished friend, and an exceptional uncle. His infectious spirit brought joy to those around him, whether through his football skills, guitar performances, witty jokes, or his passion for Star Wars. His beautiful smile, memorable back-flip tricks, and engaging conversations during Halo nights will be dearly missed.

As we remember Devon Wylie, we reflect not only on his accomplishments on the field but also on the indelible mark he left on our hearts. His legacy lives on through the memories he created and the lives he touched. In his memory, we celebrate the remarkable journey of a young man who followed his dreams and brought happiness to those who had the privilege of knowing him.
