Paul Giamatti and Cher have been playing a game of phone tag lately. During his recent chat on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, Giamatti, who’s 56, mentioned that Cher, the famous singer, is a big fan of his. Stern told Giamatti that Cher really wants to talk to him.

Giamatti admitted that Cher has been trying to reach out to him for a while now, but it’s always a mystery why. “Every now and then, I get a message from someone saying Cher really needs to talk to me,” he said. “It seems like it’s super important, but I never find out why.”

He mentioned this on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert too, saying Cher has tried to contact him a couple of times over the past few years. He even wanted to have her on his podcast Chinwag.

Giamatti said someone from his podcast team managed to get in touch with Cher, but her voicemail was cryptic. “All she said was, ‘I hear you want to talk to me,’” he said. “So I called her back, but then nothing happened after that.”

Cher did post about Giamatti’s work in the HBO series John Adams, praising his performance and saying it was worthy of an Oscar.

But Giamatti still doesn’t know why Cher wants to talk to him. “I have no idea what she could possibly want,” he said. “I’m really curious though. I’d love to talk to her about anything.”
